Using downloaded files
Diskette images need to be written to a diskette. If you attempt to copy a file to a disk with identical size, the copy process will fail. Please use a program that can write disk image files to a medium instead.
Diskette image programs:
- WinImage 8.00 (shareware, runs on any Windows compatible operating system)=]
- Rawrite (freeware, runs on DOS and Windows9x)
- Diskcopy (FreeDOS implementation, various programs named DiskCopy run on DOS)
- for additional programs see http://www.fdos.org/ripcord/rawrite/
At least a file KERNEL.SYS should appear on your created FreeDOS bootdisk, as well as a directory named FREEDOS
CD-ROM image programs:
- CDrecord (open source project, runs on DOS, Windows, Linux etc)
- K3B (Linux frontend for CDrecord?)
- ImgBurn(approve sites) (freeware, runs on Win32 compatible operating system)
- Nero (shareware, runs on Linux and any Windows compatible operating system)
The FreeDOS cdrom distribution (file fdbootcd.iso) can be written on CD-ROM, and as a CD-ROM. Only when written as a CDR-ROM, it is bootable. In that case, you should see a directory named ISOLINUX on CD-ROM. If the fdbootcd.iso file appears on CD-ROM instead of this directory, your CD-ROM is not bootable and you'll need to use a FreeDOS startup diskette (see above on how to create one) to access the files stored in the imagefile.
USB Flash Drive image programs:
- FlashBoot(approve sites) (commercial project, demo available, runs on Windows compatible operating system)
- FlashBoot has an option Create bootable flash disk with minimal set of DOS system files/Use built-in FreeDOS
- Also, you can create bootable USB Flash Drive from image of bootable FreeDOS diskette.
