Configure settings

The installation process allows you to configure several settings and attempts to use these settings in an optimal way. Available settings:

  • Use extended memory (acts as intermediate disk buffer to speed up installation)
  • Run a custom program (example: a flasprogram for updating system BIOS).
  • Select language (failure if none found, if one is found it's automatically selected, if more are found you are prompted to select a language, unless you indicated earlier which language you prefer to use)
  • select which type of installation will be performed. If a CD-ROM driver loaded successfully, it will be selected after a few seconds unless you override this default choice. Available installation sources:
    1. Diskette. Insert your data disks after the installation process has copied itself to harddisk and freed the diskdrive. Best strategy for 8086, 80286 and more recent systems that don't have a CD-ROM drive or cannot read recorded CD-ROM disks. Datadisks simply are diskettes with a series of packages (programs inside a ZIP compressed file) placed on them.
    2. CD-ROM. No disk swapping needed. Weak point is our CD-ROM driver program.
    3. Directory on harddisk. Either copy the contents of all installation diskettes to a single directory, or copy the contents of the CD-ROM to this directory.
    4. ISO file. Enter the location (including filename) of the CD-ROM imagefile that you want to use as virtual CD-ROM drive to complete the installation process.
    5. HTTP/FTP. If you have a packet driver for the network interface card that provides your internet connection, you can select to either download (and load) a stable CD-ROM driver and continue as in installation method #2 (CD-ROM), or download the FreeDOS CD-ROM imagefile to a drive and continue as in installation method #4 (ISO file)

If a CD-ROM driver is found, the installation process examines the CD-ROM drive(s) to determine if they contain a disc at all, and if so, if it contains a valid FreeDOS distribution. The disc is a FreeDOS disk when it finds AUTORUN.BAT, either directly on disc or inside a FreeDOS ISO file stored on CD-ROM under the name FDBOOTCD.ISO
