Winxp

It isn't very difficult, but you have to install it manually. First you need a partition with FAT32. You cannot do this with WinXP setup program, so you have to use another. Maybe FreeDOS Format from the FreeDOS homepage. If you don't need NTFS, then just format all partitions with FAT32.

Next step is installing Windows. Insert the CD and begin with the setup.

3rd Step is installing FreeDOS kernel. It isn't difficult. I would recommend to download the last version from FreeDOS.org. Unzip it, and type sys /?. You will see, that you can save the bootsector into a file. Type sys c: c:\fdkernel.sys if c: is your first FAT32 partition. It will also copy the command.com to drive.

  • Question: Was this tested in XP: I get the error message: \"An application is trying to access the hard drive directly. This is not supported ...\"
  • Answer: You did it fundamendally wrong. You have to boot to DOS first, and do this in DOS. You may NOT install FreeDOS from inside the crrappy NTVDM/CMD.EXE. It fact, it not not unsupported, it is rather crippled off by intention.

Use an editor to edit boot.ini in the root directory. It is a hidden file, so you maybe won't see it in Windows. Add following line into the section [operating systems]:

c:\fdkernel.sys=FreeDOS

Now you have finished and you can choose in the boot menu what os you want to launch. Just create and edit autoexec.bat and fdconfig.sys and install other FreeDOS tools from a distribution or download the latest version from FreeDOS.

Good speed!
